Girls basketball: Vancleave hires Jeremy Bowen as coach; Ocean Springs names Reshena Holloway interim coach

Two high schools in Jackson County have made hires for girls basketball coaches.

Vancleave has hired Jeremy Bowen pending school board approval, assistant superintendent Todd Knight said Monday. Bowen spent last year as interim boys basketball coach at Ocean Springs, and previously spent several years as girls coach at Florence.

Ocean Springs has elevated middle school coach Reshena Holloway to interim varsity girls coach, athletic director Mark Hubbard said Monday. Holloway -- a Collins native who played basketball at William Carey University -- replaces Jamie Sisco, who left the Greyhounds to become athletic director at Hancock.

Bowen took over at Ocean Springs last summer after Ronnie Bowen (no relation) departed for Pearl River Central. Jeremy Bowen was 9-20 in his lone season with the Greyhounds, who hired Monty Noblitt in April and moved Bowen back to junior-varsity coach.

"He actually lives in Vancleave, and we thought he was the best available candidate," Knight said. "He's got girls basketball experience and with him living in Vancleave, we thought it was a good fit."

Hubbard said that due to the timing Sisco's departure, naming Holloway as interim coach was preferable to making a permanent hire. The program and the position will be re-evaluated following the 2013-14 season, he said.

Sisco coached the Greyhounds girls for three seasons, posting a 70-22 record and winning the Division 7-6A championship each of the last two years. Prior to that, the Brookhaven native was Ocean Springs boys coach for five seasons.

"You can't fault him for leaving," Hubbard said. "He went to school and got his Master's (degree) and got an opportunity, the kind you have to take when it comes. He did a great job for us and we wish him luck. I'm looking forward to working alongside of him as a fellow AD."

At Vancleave, Bowen replaces Raina Holmes, who left to become assistant principal at Pascagoula High School. The Bulldogs reached the playoffs seven times in Holmes' nine seasons as head coach.

Bowen's hiring is expected to become official at the Aug. 12 meeting of the Jackson County School Board. He is the third head coach to be hired by the Bulldogs this summer, joining Daniel Threadgill (baseball) and Robert Johnson (basketball).
