Tour de France, golf Open and the Ashes prove a winner for broadcasters

More than 2 million viewers watched Chris Froome win the Tour de France on ITV4 on a busy sporting Sunday that also included Open golf on BBC1 and Ashes cricket on Sky Sports.

ITV4's coverage of the 21st and final stage of the Tour de France, that saw Froome become the second Briton in successive years to win the Tour after Sir Bradley Wiggins last year, had a five-minute peak of 2.1 million viewers on Sunday.

The whole of the ITV channel's coverage, which began at 4.30pm, averaged 1.1 million viewers, a 6.4% share of the audience.

At around the same time on BBC1, Phil Mickelson was winning the Open after a final found of 66. The golf had a five-minute peak of 3.4 million viewers, averaging 2.5 million between 12.40pm and 7pm for the final day's coverage.

England's comprehensive second Test win over Australia ? another teatime finish ? peaked with 1.5 million viewers on Sky Sports Ashes (the temporarily rebranded Sky Sports 2). Nine hours of coverage between 10am and 7pm averaged 807,000 viewers, a 7.8% share.

Just after England sealed their Ashes win in the final over of the day, Channel 5's cricket highlights programme had 1.3 million viewers, a 7.3% share, between 7pm and 8pm.

Sport, sport, sport. All they show is sport

BBC3's Family Guy returned for a new series on BBC3 with 1.4 million viewers, a 7.1% share, at 10pm. It was more than three times the channel's slot average over the past three months, up nearly 220%.

BBC1's The White Queen had 3.5 million viewers, a 15.8% share, between 9pm and 10pm, beaten by ITV's Law & Order: UK, with 4.6 million, a 20.9% share.

Channel 4's most watched programme was The Plane That Saved Britain, a documentary about the Mosquito, which had 1.4 million viewers, a 6.2% share, at 9pm.

It was up against Channel 5's Big Brother, watched by 1.7 million viewers, a 7.6% share.

BBC2's Top Gear, presented by the well remunerated Jeremy Clarkson and friends, had 4.1 million viewers (18.5%) between 8pm and 9pm on BBC2.
