Kodak seeks shelter in?bankruptcy court

Eastman Kodak Co, which invented the handheld camera and helped bring the world the first pictures from the moon, has filed for bankruptcy protection, capping a prolonged plunge for what remains one of America's best-known companies.

The 130-year-old photographic film pioneer, which had tried to restructure to become a seller of consumer products like cameras, said it had also obtained a $950 million, 18-month credit facility from Citigroup to keep it going.

The loan and bankruptcy protection from U.S. trade creditors may give Kodak the time it needs to find buyers for some of its 1,100 digital patents, the key to its remaining value, and to reshape its business while continuing to pay its 17,000 workers.

"The board of directors and the entire senior management team unanimously believe that this is a necessary step and the right thing to do for the future of Kodak," Chairman and Chief Executive Antonio M. Perez said in a statement.

"Now we must complete the transformation by further addressing our cost structure and effectively monetizing non-core intellectual-property assets. We look forward to working with our stakeholders to emerge a lean, world-class, digital imaging and materials science company," he added.

Kodak said that it and its U.S. subsidiaries had filed for Chapter 11 business reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Non-U.S. subsidiaries were not covered by the filing, it added.

Vote: Does Kodak still have a future?

Kodak once dominated its industry and its film was the subject of a popular Paul Simon song, but it failed to quickly embrace more modern technologies such as the digital camera -- ironically, a product it even invented.

Its downfall has already hit its Rust Belt hometown of Rochester, N.Y., with employment there falling to about 7,000 from more than 60,000 in Kodak's halcyon days.

In recent years, Perez has steered Kodak's focus more toward consumer and commercial printers.

But that failed to restore annual profitability, something Kodak has not seen since 2007, or arrest a cash drain that has made it difficult for Kodak to meet its substantial pension and other benefits obligations to its workers and retirees.

Perez said bankruptcy protection would enable Kodak to continue to work to maximize the value of its technology assets, such as digital-imaging patents it licenses for use in mobile and other devices and its printing technology.

Kodak said it was being advised by investment bank Lazard Ltd, which has been helping Kodak look for a buyer for its 1,100 digital patents.

Other advisers included business-turnaround specialist FTI Consulting Inc, whose vice chairman, Dominic DiNapoli, would serve as chief restructuring officer for Kodak, supporting existing management.

Kodak stock, which traded over $5 a year ago, closed Wednesday at 55 cents a share on the New York Stock Exchange, where it had been in danger of being delisted.

PFT: Not so fast on Schottenheimer to Rams

Kansas City Chiefs v Chicago BearsGetty Images

On one weekend every year, four highly-significant football games land on the NFL?s center stage.? This year, as we were still digesting the epic Saints-49ers finish and a Broncos-Patriots game that never really got started, and while we were anticipating Texans-Ravens and Giants-Packers, the Kansas City Star nearly slipped a potential four-alarm story through the national five hole.

According to Kent Babb of the Star, former Chiefs coach Todd Haley believes that the team bugged rooms at the facility and ?tampered with? Haley?s phone.? (The team denies the accusation.)

That?s the most compelling takeaway from a lengthy article that details many of the actual and/or perceived idiosyncrasies of the Scott Pioli regime.? Much of the information comes from former employees who naturally aren?t happy with the changes that were made, no matter how unreasonable or reasonable or necessary or unnecessary they may have been.

But the most potentially powerful nugget, as culled by Peter King in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback, comes from Haley?s allegation of wiretapping.

Like Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men, it?s unwise to accuse the Nathan Jessups of the world of serious misconduct absent, you know, facts.? If Haley believes that the Chiefs are bugging rooms and/or tapping phones, Haley needs to provide chapter-and-verse evidence.

If he?s right, people won?t simply lose their jobs; they?ll possibly land in jail, and for good reason.

The allegation is so inherently troublesome that we think the league should launch an immediate investigation.? This is a far bigger issue than brazenly videotaping defensive coaching signals during games, the foundation of the ?Spygate? scandal in New England.? If Haley is right, the Chiefs have been violating state and federal law in the name of truly spying on their employees.

That?s why accusations of this nature shouldn?t be tossed around recklessly.

We?ll give Haley the benefit of the doubt and assume that he?s not embellishing, exaggerating, and/or fabricating.? If the league reacts the same way, the investigation will have already begun.

HBT: Should Montero catch for Mariners? Maybe

Over at FanGraphs, Dave Cameron takes an extended look at the question I briefly touched on on Saturday: what position should Jesus Montero play now that he?s a Seattle Mariner?

My quick view, based on the roster more than anything else, was that Montero should at least be given a shot to catch to see how he does and see if he can be made serviceable. ?Dave?s view: that if Montero can avoid being the worst catcher in baseball, it?s probably worth a shot, citing Mike Napoli as a success story. With success being defined as ?no, he?s not great, but his bat at catcher outweighs his defensive shortcomings.?

Of course, there?s an in-depth statistical analysis of all of this which, even if you don?t care about the stats themselves of about Montero or the Mariners, provide a nice walk though all of the ways catchers? defense matters. ?It?s not just about throwing out base stealers.

And while we?re on the subject, let me promote myself by noting that I will be on NBC SportsTalk on the NBC Sports Network tonight at around 6:50 Eastern to discuss the Montero-Michael Pineda trade. ?You should totally watch: I?m sneaky-handsome.

An Economy that Sees Children, Pets and the Elderly Increasingly ...

The move toward the FDA we know today began way back in1938 in reaction to a Tennessee firm that sold an elixir that chemically approached antifreeze.? It? killed young children and the elderly.? If you are a pharmaceutical company, those are the very populations you go out of your way to protect.? The result of this tragedy was the Food Drug and Cosmetic act of 1938 that laid the groundwork for New Drug development in the US. [FDA.gov]

But in times of turmoil and distress, these very populations are the first overboard.? With people losing jobs and money, we have been reading for months of dogs, cats, horses and other pets being abandoned ? many left in cages in their yards to die.? Now last week came stories out of Greece of children being abandoned by parents who could no longer afford care for them.

And the elderly?? They have listened for months about how cuts to Medicare must be the saving grace for socialized medicine.? After all, we again live in the real world of the survival of the fittest.? In this country ? in the west in fact ? the period from 1920 until now was a kind of fantasy we all passed through. So many thought it would last forever and generations of people forgot what life on this planet really entailed.

You still have to work hard if you want anything.? You may not be cared for unless you prepare for it yourself. The wolf will always be at the door; the Indians will always be circling the wagons.? We have been very fortunate up until now.? The ?Indians?? of today are the more militant Arabs and Europeans and others now living through social, economic and political upheaval.? How could we have forgot so quickly (in terms of the long road of human time) about the true nature of life here? And now that we have been abruptly reminded, many are carrying on as if they have been unfairly deprived of? a lifestyle they think they deserve.

Crowds gather and rail at mother government for not protecting them better. They deserve to be fed and clothed and housed and educated.? Days have been spent in tents demonstrating in front of? Wall Street financial institutions and in cities across the US.? But who among them even thought to volunteer to better not only their own lives independently but to benefit that of? others as well?

No, it is always someone else?s fault. And if you don?t get paid for something, well, you won?t do it.? Then, when you can no longer care for your own, you give what you have ? kids, dogs, cats, grandparents ? to the care of others.? No trying to band with others to try to pool resources to help keep families together is something so many in this generation just cannot do.? They lack basic social skills and a sensitivity to the need of others that marked earlier decades of the 1900s.? After all even BEFORE taxes, the wealthy of this country endowed libraries, hospitals, concert halls, research clinics and? hospitals ? the list is endless.

Daily we are creating chaos within chaos and it appears endless.? In the 1930s, were there the abandoned animals and children as? there are now?? If we remembered history, should be have been better prepared to go into a period like the one we are in?

So, as we discovered after WWII, Germans were not unique in creating a holocaust, now we see that what happened in Greece last week, happened here early last century.

The sad fact is that with the dissolution of a decent education system in this country, no one has even the faintest grasp of history anymore nor do they think things through in a way that may lead to a solution to something.? It is a globe of screaming, demanding disappointed adults acting like criminal children deprived of doing anything they want.? This is not to undercut the citizens of Syria or now of Romania once again in the streets but the disease taking down many governments is self-interest.? Few are the stories we hear today of a good Samaritan. Why bother?? It?s someone else?s problem ? no doubt the government?s.

Friendships in this country have been adulterated by ?networking? ? using people essentially to get somewhere.? We are a ?user? society and now there is nothing to use and nowhere to go. What will we do?? Will we again learn about, say, growing vegetables to eat?? Helping someone with less ? sharing without having something taken from you through taxation or force?

The thing at risk today is not THE Constitution but our constitution.? We have lost our freedom because we stopped working hard for it.? No one came here deposed royalty. Our pioneer forefathers; the native peoples so well adapted to their world both had hard lives.? Middle class Americans have not yet begun to know what living a hard life is.? It is creeping upon us slowly.

People are still forced from their homes.? But where are the VOLUNTEERS that will help them to keep together as a family and find food.? We have not yet begun to suffer; we have not yet begun to learn that sharing and caring are the only things that will save us from losing everything and keep us civilized people of constitution.

In this image released by NBC, host Ricky Gervais speaks during the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/NBC, Paul Drinkwater)

(AP) ? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association dared to let Ricky Gervais come back and host the Golden Globe Awards, a year after he insulted the organization and nearly everyone in the star-studded room with his lacerating wit.

But Gervais and the show seemed tamer and more predictable this year, not quite living up to outrageous reputations. Even the winners themselves, including "The Descendants" and its star, George Clooney, were predictable.

The victory for "The Descendants" in the best drama category sets it up in an expected battle at the Academy Awards with "The Artist," which won the award for best musical or comedy. Both had been frontrunners all along among people who are the business of prognosticating these things; Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 24, with the ceremony itself coming Feb. 26.

Clooney won for his portrayal of a middle-aged husband struggling to raise his two daughters while their mother is in a coma. Jean Dujardin won the same award in the musical or comedy category for "The Artist" as a silent film actor whose career derails with the arrival of sound. ("The Artist" won the most film awards with three total, including one for Ludovic Bource's original score.)

It took the presenters and winners themselves to liven up the program ? and that includes Uggie, Dujardin's scene-stealing Jack Russell terrier in "The Artist," who performed some of his signature tricks on stage toward the end of the night.

While Gervais dropped an F-bomb a couple hours into the broadcast ? likely an accident after some imbibing on and offstage ? he also took aim at easy targets like Kim Kardashian. Later, wine glass in hand, he emerged from the wings to express delight in having "a job where you can get drunk and say what you want, and they still pay you."

After he introduced Madonna with a series of hackneyed puns about her song titles, including "Like a Virgin," the pop star shot back.

"If I'm still just like a virgin, Ricky, then why don't you come over here and do something about it?" she deadpanned. "I haven't kissed a girl in a few years ? on TV."

Male genitalia was a frequent theme. Tina Fey and Jane Lynch teamed up to make a penis pun inspired by "Hung" star Thomas Jane. Seth Rogen, taking the stage with the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale, cracked: "Hello, I'm Seth Rogen, and I'm currently trying to conceal a massive erection." And Clooney, in accepting his best-actor award, made a joke about fellow nominee Michael Fassbender, who plays a sex addict in "Shame."

"I'd like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the full-frontal nudity responsibility that I had," and Clooney then went on to suggest Fassbender could play golf with his hands behind his back.

Even Meryl Streep ? the grand dame of them all who won for best actress in a drama for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" ? let an expletive slip during her acceptance speech. Streep got flustered when she realized she forgot her glasses at her table; instead she winged it, giving a rambling (but gracious) speech praising other actresses' performances, including some who hadn't even been nominated that night.

Two of Hollywood's most veteran and esteemed directors also were winners Sunday night, both of whom were venturing into 3-D for the first time: Martin Scorsese for best director for the family fantasy "Hugo" and Steven Spielberg for best animated film for "The Adventures of Tintin." Meanwhile, Woody Allen won for his screenplay for "Midnight in Paris" ? but naturally, he wasn't there to accept the statue in person. The comedy is his biggest hit in decades but he's typically reluctant to attend awards shows.

Things were much more fresh and inspired on the television side of the ceremony, with daring shows earning honors and longtime stars going home with statues for new roles.

"Homeland" on Showtime, which explores terrorism and an Iraq war veteran, earned awards for best drama and best actress in a drama for star Claire Danes. It was Danes' third Globe; she won her first when she was just 15 for "My So-Called Life."

Former "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer won best actor in a drama for Starz's "Boss," while former "Friends" star Matt LeBlanc won best actor in a musical or comedy for Showtime's "Episodes."

ABC's "Modern Family" was the big winner among commercial broadcast networks, following up its Emmy for best television comedy by winning the Golden Globe. Creator Steve Levitan and actress Sofia Vergara accepted the award with a comic riff in which she spoke in Spanish and Levitan "translated."

Let's hope the after-parties got wilder.

PFT: 'We're a dangerous team,' Coughlin says

File photo of Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher in JacksonvilleReuters

The connection between new Rams coach Jeff Fisher, his agent Marvin Demoff, and Rams COO Kevin Demoff largely has been overlooked over the past two weeks.? We?ve pointed out the benefit to the Rams of having Kevin Demoff in position to trust the information he?s hearing from his father regarding the terms Fisher needed, and the terms the Dolphin were offering.? We?ve also observed that, in order for Kevin Demoff to escape scrutiny regarding the question of whether rolled over for his father and thus for Fisher, the Demoffs needed another team that would be offering similar bells and whistles to that which Fisher wanted.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated, who discloses that he?s also represented by Marvin Demoff (more NFL reporters and broadcasters should be willing to do the same regarding their own representation), writes in today?s Monday Morning Quarterback that King has heard in some circles an inference that ?the fix was in,? and that Marvin Demoff delivered Fisher to Demoff?s son.? King spoke with Fisher, who predictably but nevertheless credibly denied that he was steered to the Rams by Marvin Demoff, or by anyone.

?Under no circumstances at any time,? Fisher said.? ?I have 100 percent conviction on that.? This was my decision, and Marvin assisted me.? I was the one who decided.? No one pushed me anywhere.?

King also asked how the decision was made.? ?From day one, when I began this process after the season, I felt Miami and St. Louis were my best options,? Fisher said.? ?I did my research. I looked at every team that had an opening.? I looked at the personnel on each team, I looked at the owners, I looked at the cap situations, and I narrowed it to two.? Not Marvin.? Me.? Marvin didn?t push me.? I am convinced he was completely objective.?

Fisher?s response implies that more than two teams were chasing Fisher.? Still, when the time came to negotiate with the Rams, Fisher needed a second team in order to get the best deal possible from the Rams, without exposing Kevin Demoff to criticism for giving up too much to get his dad?s client.

King separately writes, contrary to reports from guys like Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports and Adam Schefter of ESPN, that Fisher didn?t want final say over the roster in either St. Louis or Miami.? ?All he wanted was the ability to ? in the event he was categorically opposed to a decision being made by the general manager ? have a mechanism in place for a third party, like an owner, to decide which way the team would go,? says King.

Apparently, Fisher wants to avoid a situation in which another Vince Young is shoved down Fisher?s throat.? But here?s the thing.? If Fisher wants the owner to settle any tie between Fisher and the G.M., it won?t save him from having a player taken against Fisher?s wishes if the owner wants to take that player.

After all, it was the owner in Tennessee who wanted to take Vince Young.

In the end, the Demoff connection helped St. Louis get Fisher.? But everyone knew about the Demoff connection going in; in the end, the Dolphins should have been far more vigilant about ensuring that they weren?t being served like potato salad at a father-son picnic.

MANCHESTER, England - Paul Scholes scored his first goal since ending his short-lived retirement to help Manchester United to a 3-0 Premier League win over Bolton on Saturday.

In the second match of his comeback, Scholes turned in Wayne Rooney's cross in the 45th minute for his first goal since August 2010. Scholes' 151st league goal helped United pull two points ahead of third-place Tottenham, which drew 1-1 with relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United trails City on goal difference, although City can restore its three-point lead if it beats Wigan on Monday.

Six months after ending a career during which he only played for United, the 37-year-old Scholes returned in last weekend's FA Cup win over Manchester City. On Saturday, he became the oldest Englishman to score a league goal for United.

Danny Welbeck made it 2-0 in the 74th from an assist by Rooney, and Michael Carrick completed the scoring with seven minutes remaining. Rooney's first-half penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Adam Bogdan.

Tottenham dominated Wolves at White Hart Lane but Steven Fletcher put the visitors ahead from a rebound in the 22nd minute after U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel parried Roger Johnson's header from a corner. Emmanuel Adebayor had a goal disallowed for offside just before halftime before Luka Modric tied it in the 51st.

City and United have 48 points, two more than Tottenham. Chelsea is another six points back in the final Champions League qualifying position after beating Sunderland 1-0 on Frank Lampard's goal.

Liverpool drew 0-0 with visiting Stoke and could be four points behind fifth-place Arsenal if the Gunners win at Swansea on Sunday, when Newcastle could replace Liverpool in sixth place if it beats visiting Queens Park Rangers.

Blackburn lifted itself out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 win over Fulham even though it played 67 minutes with 10 men.

Norwich won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion, while Los Angeles Galaxy teammates Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane faced each other in Everton's 1-1 draw at Aston Villa. Donovan set up Darren Bent's 69th-minute equalizer for Everton. Keane entered as a substitute in the 81st minute.

___

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Spanish league leader Real Madrid needed a pair of late goals for a 2-1 victory at Mallorca, its seventh straight road win.

Tomer Hemed put the hosts ahead with a goal on a 39th-minute header, but Gonzalo Higuain tied the score in the 72nd and Jose Callejon scored in the 84th as Madrid opened an eight-point lead over three-time defending champion Barcelona, which hosts Real Betis on Sunday.

Madrid hosts Barcelona on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals, with the rivals meeting the following week in Barcelona ? the ninth "clasico" in nine months.

Sevilla's league winless streak reached four when it was tied 0-0 by visiting Espanyol, Rayo Vallecano beat Granada 2-1 and last-place Zaragoza's league winless streak reached 11 with a 1-1 draw against visiting Getafe.

___

MILAN (AP) ? Roma's Serie A game at Catania was suspended in the 66th minute due to heavy rain in the Sicilian city. The game will be completed on Feb. 8 or 15., depending on whether Roma beats Juventus to reach the Italian Cup semifinals.

Nicola Legrottaglie gave Catania the lead in 24th minute, and Daniele De Rossi tied it four minutes later. Roma is seventh in the Serie A standings, five points above eighth-placed Catania.

___

PARIS (AP) ? Paris Saint-Germain gave new coach Carlo Ancelotti a win in his first league game, beating Toulouse 3-1 to maintain a three-point lead over Montpellier.

As the French league resumed following its winter break, Nene scored in the 38th and 67th minutes and Javier Pastore in the 56th as the hosts built a 3-0 lead. Daniel Braathen got Toulouse's goal in the 88th.

Montpellier beat Lyon 1-0 on Olivier Giroud's 62nd-minute goal, his 14th in the league this season. There was pushing and shoving in the tunnel between the teams after the game.

___

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? Celtic maintained its two-point lead over defending champion Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 2-1 win over Dundee United.

Gary Hooper and Victor Wanyama struck in the first 17 minutes for Celtic. John Rankin replied in the 50th minute for Dundee United.

Nikica Jelavic scored twice to give Rangers a 2-1 win at St. Johnstone. Jelavic delivered the winner with nine minutes remaining after American defender Carlos Bocanegra's 68th-minute own-goal threatened to give St. Johnstone a draw.

Hearts beat St. Mirren 5-2; Hibernian downed Dunfermline 3-2; Inverness defeated Motherwell 1-0; and Aberdeen drew 0-0 with Kilmarnock.

___

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Kevin Mirallas scored in each half to help Greek league leader Olympiakos beat visiting Levadiakos 3-1.

Olympiakos opened the scoring on an own goal by Panayiotis Korbos in the 41st minute, and Mirallas scored his first for the champions just before halftime. Stefano Napoleoni scored for Levadiakos in the 65th before Mirallas struck again two minutes later. Olympiakos leads Panathinaikos and AEK by seven points.

Panathinaikos, which has three games in hand on the league leader, visits Giannena on Sunday. AEK missed a chance to gain sole possession of second place by drawing 1-1 at home to Xanthi.

Packers, Giants get boost from history (AP)

Athletes and coaches don't live in the past. They do get enlightened and, sometimes, uplifted from it.

The Green Bay Packers and New York Giants have good memories from recent postseasons. Green Bay went from sixth-seeded NFC wild card to Super Bowl champion a year ago. New York used a similar route to win the 2007 NFL championship ? winning at Lambeau Field on the way.

They meet Sunday in the final game of the divisional round.

In going 15-1, including winning all eight home games, the Packers established themselves as the cream of the NFL this season. They have gotten healthy during their bye. They beat the Giants 38-35 in the Meadowlands on Dec. 4.

Most significantly, they discovered how to win in last year's surge to the title.

"I think we learned a lot last year being a six seed and having to go on the road," star quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "You take on a different attitude as a team as the road team going into a hostile environment. I think that prepares us for the mindset that the opposing team is going to have. It is a different feeling, and last year we just got in and this year we had a run and got a bye. So it is a different feeling, but last year really helped."

Just as 2007 certainly helped the Giants. They fell to New England in the season finale that year, completing the Patriots' undefeated record, but gained so much confidence from that loss that they were not intimidated when they met up with the Patriots in the Super Bowl. The Giants won 17-14.

That defeat five weeks ago to the Packers also brought confidence. New York fell to 6-6 with that fourth straight loss, but won three of its last four to take the NFC East, then easily handled Atlanta 24-2 in the wild-card round last Sunday.

"We're extremely excited to have all of our key guys intact that we're going to ride with going through this postseason," safety Antrel Rolle said, noting that defensive end Osi Umenyiora and linebacker Michael Boley didn't play against Green Bay but will this time.

"We're excited. We're excited about the opportunity that's ahead of us and we're excited about playing together and understanding the defense, understanding each other, understanding that this guy is going to be next to us and he's fighting with everything he has."

Also fighting to get into the conference championship games were New Orleans (14-3) and San Francisco (13-3), who open the second round of the playoffs Saturday afternoon.

That NFC matchup will be followed by Tim Tebow and Denver (9-8) at New England (13-3).

Before the Giants and Packers renew their rivalry, Houston (11-6) will be at Baltimore (12-4) on Sunday.

No visitor has won at Lambeau Field since Miami managed the feat on Oct. 17, 2010. The Giants were blown out 45-17 in Game 15 of that season when they were in position to make the playoffs.

But coach Mike McCarthy knows there is more to be learned from this edition of the Giants, the team that challenged his Packers as much as anyone in 2011.

"There is a reason why we are both playing in this game. We are two of the last four teams in the NFC," McCarthy said. "They are playing well and they wouldn't be here if they were not, so to me, that is to be expected. I think they are playing better than when they played us and earlier in the season they had some tough defeats also. It is playoff football and they are a very good football team."

Baltimore has been very good in each of John Harbaugh's four seasons as coach, but this is the first time the Ravens are playing a home game after three successive wild-card appearances. The Ravens were 8-0 at home, including a 29-14 victory over Houston in October.

"If you look at wild card weekend, I don't think that there was one home team that lost the whole weekend," Lewis said. "When you get into that, it plays a big momentum. It's a big momentum swing for you. It's just hard to win on the road. I don't care who you are, I don't care how good you are, it's hard to win on the road.

"For us to work as hard as we did, get 12 wins, do the things we were supposed to do, and now get this home playoff game, we have positioned ourselves to be in the right place. Now we have to go finish it."

Houston is 0-5 in meetings with Baltimore, but its first postseason game, in its 10th season, was a strong victory over Cincinnati last Saturday.

"It's been pretty one-sided so, we've got to get on the board," tackle Eric Winston said. "At the same time, you've got to look back on it and I don't think a lot of that stuff is going to have a lot of bearing on this game either, though.

"So, there's different guys, there's a different situation and we all know from past experiences that playoffs, funny things happen in the playoffs and games turn out a lot different than they did in the regular season. So hopefully we can hold true to that."

DNA Damage From Chemo May Help Spur Leukemia's Return (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Jan. 12 (HealthDay News) -- The chemotherapy used to treat a form of adult leukemia sets a trap that can result in the return of the disease within years, a new study suggests.

The finding confirms the suspicions of specialists who thought chemotherapy drugs could disrupt DNA through mutations and ultimately allow tumor cells to avoid the effects of the medications.

"Chemotherapy drugs are absolutely necessary to get leukemia patients into remission, but we also pay a price in terms of DNA damage," study co-author Dr. Timothy Ley, a professor of oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, said in a university news release.

These drugs "may contribute to disease progression and relapse in many different cancers, which is why our long-term goal is to find targeted therapies based on the mutations specific to a patient's cancer, rather than use drugs that further damage DNA," Ley added.

The type of leukemia in question is known as acute myeloid leukemia. While chemotherapy treatment can send the cancer into remission, 80 percent of patients die within five years. In the United States, about 13,000 cases of acute myeloid leukemia are diagnosed annually, most often in people age 60 and older.

The researchers came to their conclusions after studying the genomes -- the entire DNA, both healthy and cancerous cells -- from eight patients with acute myeloid leukemia. They watched to see what happened after the patients received chemotherapy.

The investigators found that tumors essentially reappeared, according to the report published in the Jan. 11 advance online edition of Nature.

"It's the same tumor coming back but with a twist," co-author Richard Wilson, director of university's Genome Institute, explained in the news release. It "comes back with new mutations that give the cells new strategies for surviving attack by whatever drugs are thrown at them. This makes a lot of sense but it's been hard to prove without whole-genome sequencing."

Commenting on the report, Louis DeGennaro, executive vice president and chief mission officer of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, said the study "demonstrates the critical need to identify disease-causing mutations in acute myeloid leukemia so that therapies targeted specifically at these mutations can be developed."

Ultimately, he added, "that would allow us to avoid the use of chemotherapy, which may contribute to cancer relapse."

For now, DeGennaro said, "while current chemotherapy regimens have liabilities, they represent the best treatment currently available and may result in complete remission, which would allow eligible patients to receive a stem cell transplant, the only treatment capable of curing acute myeloid leukemia."

Sheeran leads BRIT nominations, Adele eyes return (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran led the field with four BRIT nominations on Thursday, one ahead of global chart queen Adele who is down to perform at the awards after months out for throat surgery.

The annual honors, Britain's top pop awards, will be handed out at London's O2 Arena on February 21, and Adele's live UK comeback is likely to be among the highlights.

The 23-year-old had the world's top-selling album last year with "21", which sold 5.8 million copies in the United States alone, and picked up six Grammy nominations in a triumphant year.

Adding to her list of accolades on Thursday, the "Rolling in the Deep" singer earned three BRIT nods and was bested only by the less familiar face of Sheeran.

The 20-year-old, whose debut album "+" topped the UK charts and has sold nearly a million copies in Britain so far, scooped four nominations, including for the coveted British Album of the Year prize sponsored by Mastercard.

He is also in the running for British male solo artist, British breakthrough act and British single for "The A Team".

Sheeran performed "Give Me Love" at a nominations launch in central London and confirmed he would sing it again at the main awards show.

On the red carpet before the event, he explained why he had featured Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley, in his video for the track "Lego House".

"I went to school and was a ginger (haired) kid, so you're obviously going to get the Ron Weasley comments at some point so I just thought I would take the piss out of myself and get him to play me," Sheeran told Reuters.

Just behind him with three nominations apiece were Adele and Jessie J, the 2011 winner of the Critics' Choice award for rising music stars.

Adele is up against Sheeran in the British Album category for "21" and was also nominated for British female solo artist and British single ("Someone Like You").

Jessie J competes in the female solo artist, British breakthrough and single categories, the latter for "Price Tag".

Veteran Kate Bush is also vying for best female act, sealing a remarkable comeback.

Florence & the Machine and Coldplay are each nominated twice, as are Emeli Sande, this year's Critics' Choice winner, and Americans Bon Iver and Aloe Blacc.

Playing at the awards ceremony next month are expected to be Adele, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Sheeran, Florence & the Machine, Rihanna, Noel Gallagher and Blur, recipients of the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, according to a list released by organizers.

Snoop Dog hit with minor drug charge in Texas (AP)

EL PASO, Texas ? Rapper Snoop Dogg is facing a minor drug charge in Texas after border agents say they found several joints on his tour bus over the weekend.

Hudspeth County sheriff's office said in a statement that Snoop Dogg, whose name is Calvin Broadus, was arrested Saturday at the Sierra Blanca highway checkpoint and cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor typical in cases involving small amounts of marijuana.

County Judge Becky Dean Walker says paraphernalia citations are typically resolved by a no contest plea and a mailed-in fine of up to $500.

The artist's agent didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

Country singer Willie Nelson was arrested in November 2010 for marijuana possession at that same checkpoint.

7 burned fishermen to be flown from Antarctica (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? Rescue officials say a U.S. Air Force plane will airlift seven crewmen burned in a raging fire on their ship near Antarctica that killed three other fishermen.

They say the plane will leave New Zealand on Thursday and fly to Antarctica to pick up the four Vietnamese and three Indonesian crew.

The fire on the South Korean ship Jung Woo 2 quickly spread despite the crew's attempts to fight it Wednesday. Thirty-seven crew members were rescued, including the injured. Two were severely burned and were initially unconscious.

The injured crewmen have been receiving medical treatment on an Antarctic-bound U.S. research vessel with medical staff and facilities.

Weather and other factors will determine when the ship and plane rendezvous at McMurdo base. New Zealand's rescue coordination center estimated the plane would return with the injured crewmen to Christchurch late Friday morning New Zealand time.

The burning boat will be towed from Antarctica to minimize the environmental impact.

Life sentence sought for Frankfurt airport shooter (AP)

FRANKFURT, Germany ? Prosecutors are asking for a sentence of life in prison for an alleged Islamic extremist who has admitted killing two U.S. airmen at the Frankfurt airport last year.

The dapd news agency reported that Prosecutor Jochen Weingarten told the Frankfurt state court in closing arguments Monday that Arid Uka deserved the maximum possible sentence due to the brutal nature of the crime.

The 21-year-old ethnic Albanian from Kosovo confessed as the trial opened to killing two men at point-blank range before wounding two more airmen and taking aim at a third before his gun misfired.

Under German law the court still has to review all the evidence despite the confession.

A verdict is expected on Jan. 19.

Cargo drone makes debut in Afghanistan

(AP) ? The U.S. military is testing a revolutionary new drone for its arsenal, a pilotless helicopter intended to fly cargo missions to remote outposts where frequent roadside bombs threaten access by road convoys.

Surveillance drones for monitoring enemy activity and armed versions for launching airstrikes have become a trademark of America's wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East. But this is the first time a chopper version designed for transport has ben used operationally.

Two unmanned models of the Kaman K-MAX helicopters and a team of 16 company technicians and 8 Marines are conducting a 6-month evaluation program for the new craft at Camp Dwyer, a Marine Corps airfield in the Garmsir district of southern Helmand Province.

The craft have flown 20 transport missions since the inaugural flight on Dec. 17, said Maj. Kyle O'Connor, the officer in charge of the detachment. They have delivered nearly 18 tons of cargo, mainly thousands of Meals Ready to Eat and spare parts needed at the forward operating bases.

"Afghanistan is a highly mined country and the possibility of improvised explosive devices is always a problem moving cargo overland in a convoy," O'Connor said.

"Every load that we can take off of a ground convoy reduces the danger and risk that our Marines, soldiers, and sailors are faced with," he said. "With an unmanned helicopter, even the aircrew is taken out of harm's way."

The Marines from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 1 lead the missions and deliver the cargo into combat drop zones, while contractors operate and maintain the two aircraft.

The craft's onboard computer uploads the mission plans, enabling them to fly on autopilot. But an operator at base control monitors progress and can step in and override the autopilot for manual operation if any problems occur, or if the drone must be redirected in mid-flight.

The K-MAX is the latest in a series of Kaman synchronized twin-rotor helicopters dating from the 1950s. The unusual arrangement, with two side-by-side pylons on the helicopter's roof supporting counter-rotating blades, results in exceptional stability while hovering and allows pinpoint cargo delivery.

During the Vietnam War, a previous Kaman model, the two-pilot HH-43 Huskie, flew more rescue missions than all other aircraft combined because of this unique hovering capability.

The manned version of the K-MAX helicopter first appeared in the 1990s, and the pilotless prototype was unveiled in 2008. It can carry a maximum payload of 6,855 pounds (3,100 kilograms) and costs about $1,100 an hour to operate, several times less than any manned helicopter.

After a six-month test period, the military will determine whether to put the craft into regular operational use.

Throughout the 10-year war, NATO troops have wrestled with serious logistics problems in the high-threat areas of southern and eastern Afghanistan. Resupplying the isolated forward operating bases has meant facing the dangers of frequent ambushes and roadside bombs.

This has meant that specialized escort units, known as route clearance packages, must escort all supply convoys.

"This is very time-consuming because you have to clear the routes for every single mission," said Theo Farrell, Professor of War at King's College London. "Also, there is a shortage of route clearance packages due to the high demand for them."

But the use of large manned helicopters to deliver supplies has also proved problematic as they present easy targets for Taliban machine-gunners while hovering over the delivery point, he said.

"The use of drone choppers could resolve both problems," Farrell said. "It reduces the need for armed escorts and presents a much smaller target to the enemy."

Scandal-ridden Penn State tabs Pats' coach

STATE COLLEGE, Pa -- New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien has agreed to become Penn State's first new head football coach in nearly a half-century.

Two people in the NFL with knowledge of the search told The Associated Press on Friday morning that O'Brien has told them he plans to replace fired coach Joe Paterno. Another person familiar with the search told the AP terms and details still needed to be set, and that deal could be finalized Friday night or Saturday.

The persons spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the search.

ESPN, citing unnamed sources, first reported Thursday night an official announcement would be made Saturday, and that O'Brien would remain with the Patriots as an assistant through the postseason. Two people have told the AP the report was credible.

According to a website that tracks flights, a plane registered to Penn State was scheduled to depart State College for Boston at mid-afternoon Friday.

Acting Athletic Director David Joyner declined comment on the reports about O'Brien when he arrived Friday at the team's spacious, glass-enclosed headquarters on campus. He was scheduled to meet with the coaching staff and other officials at the program.

"I'm not going to confirm anything as I've always done out of respect for people," Joyner said told reporters. "When there is something to confirm, I'll let you know."

By dusk, several coaches had trickled out one-by-one from the football building to head home. Each declined comment.

A person familiar with the discussion told the AP Friday evening that the assistant coaches were informed that a new head coach had been hired, and was not from the current staff, though the replacement was not identified. That person also spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to speak about the discussion.

Division I's winningest coach with 409 victories, Paterno was fired Nov. 9 by university trustees following 46 seasons in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. O'Brien has no apparent ties to Penn State and a proud program tarnished by a scandal that also led to the departure of school President Graham Spanier.

Penn State coaches had not received any word on O'Brien or anything else related to the two-month long search as of Friday morning. The staff was assembled by Paterno, and most of coaches had worked for the Hall of Famer for years - and in a couple cases, decades.

The person familiar with the search told the AP most of the current staff could be let go.

O'Brien had an interview Thursday. A Patriots spokesman declined comment Thursday night, and a university spokesman declined comment Friday.

This was O'Brien's first year coordinating the Patriots' high-scoring offense, but he has also coached star quarterback Tom Brady since 2009 and spent 2008 coaching receivers.

O'Brien recently was in the spotlight when he and Brady got into a heated argument, shown on national television, after Brady threw an interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter of the Patriots' 34-27 win over the Washington Redskins on Dec. 11.

New England closed the regular season on an eight-game winning streak, and scored 513 points, the most in the AFC. Brady threw for 5,235 yards and 39 touchdowns, while being picked off just 12 times.

"He's been a great coach and friend. We have a great relationship; probably a very unique relationship in that we communicate all the time," Brady said Sunday about O'Brien. "I always enjoy working with him and he's done an incredible job with this team and this offense."

The Patriots are off this week, and will host a divisional round playoff game next weekend. They went 13-3 this season, won the AFC East championship going away, and secured the conference's No. 1 seed throughout the playoffs.

"He's done great for us and he's going to keep on doing well for us and I look forward to preparing with him this next week," receiver Julian Edelman said Friday in Foxborough. He described O'Brien as charismatic and emotional.

O'Brien "is a very passionate guy, knows his stuff," Edelman said. "And you know he's going to give it his all always and I love playing for him."

But the selection of a coach without Penn State ties may not sit well with several prominent former players or some alumni. Former standout linebackers LaVar Arrington and Brandon Short had organized a petition in support of interim coach Tom Bradley's candidacy. Short said the petition only included about 100 names after he was informed by a member of Penn State's search committee it was enough to sway their opinions.

He said he planned to meet with Joyner on Friday in a meeting scheduled before reports began to surface about O'Brien. He would consider cutting ties with his alma mater if the O'Brien reports were true, and he said some former players - operating independently of the official Football Letterman Club for football alumni - might consider a lawsuit that would prevent the school from using their likenesses or images in the future.

Now an investment banker in New York, Short played seven seasons with the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers. He called Bradley the best candidate for the job, citing Bradley's role in helping to maintain the program's high academic standards and ability to help Penn State

"There are thousands of other players who will tell you the same thing. The administration is under the belief that if they hire an NFL coach, or someone flashy, that they will fill seats," Short said in phone interview Thursday. "As an NFL player I can tell you that there is a big difference between developing young men and recruiting, then the combine and free agency. It's two different universes."

D.J. Dozier, a running back on the 1986 title team, said Thursday the search committee should poll current and former players and high school coaches in the region. He planned to sign the petition if more signatures were taken.

"Give that person and that staff a chance. I believe the current staff has done a good job," Dozier said. "Unless there's politics involved, give them a chance."

Some alumni also lobbied for Bradley, a 33-year veteran of the Penn State staff and defensive coordinator since 2000.

Prominent donor Anthony Lubrano, a Penn State graduate, questioned the school's hiring process.

"Bill O'Brien might well be a fine football coach and more importantly an even finer human being," Lubrano wrote in an email. "But by excluding the football (lettermen) from the search process, this administration has effectively communicated to them that their contributions to the Penn State family don't matter."

O'Brien joined New England in 2007 following 14 seasons on the college level, including stops at Duke, Maryland and Georgia Tech. He played football at Brown - Paterno's alma mater.

The Patriots are third in the NFL overall in scoring (32.1 points per game), and second in total offense (428 yards) and passing (317.8 yards).

Penn State finished a 9-4 campaign with a 30-14 loss in the TicketCity Bowl to Houston on Jan. 2. The Nittany Lions relied on defense much of the year after the offense struggled with a two-quarterback system.

Penn State officials had termed the search "methodical and deliberate." Joyner said earlier Thursday he would like to have Paterno's replacement in place by Jan. 13, the start of 16-day recruiting window before high school seniors can begin to announce their official intentions to attend college on Feb. 1.

Bradley, who took over for Paterno on an interim basis, was among the candidates interviewed. He was on the road recruiting Thursday.
