Medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements across states explored

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In states where medical exemptions from vaccination requirements for kindergarten students are easier to get, exemption rates are higher, potentially compromising herd immunity and posing a threat to children and others who truly should not be immunized because of underlying conditions, according to a study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases and now available online.

Nationwide in scope, the study found inconsistency among states in standards allowing medical exemptions from school immunization requirements. The investigators concluded that medical exemptions should be monitored and continuously evaluated to ensure they are used appropriately.

In their study, Stephanie Stadlin, MPH, Robert A. Bednarczyk, PhD, and Saad B. Omer, MBBS, MPH, PhD, from the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, evaluated state medical exemptions from kindergarten entry requirements over seven school years (from 2004-'05 to 2010-'11), which totaled 87,631 medical exemptions nationwide over the period studied. The researchers found that, compared to states with more stringent criteria for getting medical exemptions, states with easier requirements saw a significant increase in these exemptions. Their findings suggest that requiring more accountability of both parents and physicians for granting medical exemptions can be helpful in ensuring that these exemptions are valid and not used as an alternative to non-medical exemptions because they are easier to obtain.

"The appropriate use of medical exemptions is important to maintaining sufficient herd immunity to protect those who should not be vaccinated due to medical contra-indications," said Dr. Omer, the senior investigator of the study. "Medical providers, parents, school officials, and state health officials are responsible for ensuring that medical exemptions are actually medically indicated."

In an accompanying editorial, Daniel A Salmon, PhD, MPH, and Neal Halsey, MD, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, noted that "children with valid medical exemptions need to be protected from exposure to vaccine preventable diseases by insuring high coverage rates among the rest of the population. Granting medical exemptions for invalid medical contraindications may promote unfounded vaccine safety concerns." The researchers' findings, they added, should be useful to those responsible for implementing and enforcing school immunization requirements at the state and local levels.

Facebook co-founder sells 450,000 shares

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz is shedding another 450,000 company shares for a take of about $8.7 million.

Moskovitz has been selling 150,000 shares a day and disclosing the sales every three days. Including the most recent sale, he still holds more than 130 million shares.

The latest filing, made late Wednesday, covered sales from Monday to Wednesday. He sold shares at prices ranging from $19 to $19.49.

Shares of Facebook Inc., based in Menlo Park, Calif., have been in steep decline since debuting at $38 each in May. Shares hit a new low last week and haven't traded above $20 in two weeks.

Moskovitz, 28, was Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard roommate when they founded Facebook in 2004. He left in 2008 and started the software company Asana.

Knight accepts Nasdaq's $62-million Facebook payback plan

(Reuters) - After initially criticizing Nasdaq OMX Group for its response to Facebook's botched initial public offering, trading firm Knight Capital Group Inc said it accepted the exchange's latest plan to pay back brokers a portion of their losses.

Knight's support comes after Nasdaq increased the payback fund to $62 million in cash from an earlier $40 million made up mostly of trading rebates, the market-making firm said in a letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, dated August 29.

Knight, which facilitates trades for other firms, had called Nasdaq's earlier plan "inadequate," and said it was considering legal action over the May 18 IPO.

"Although we would have preferred that the accommodation pool cover all losses sustained by Nasdaq members, we do support Nasdaq's proposal to increase the accommodation pool from $40 million to $62 million," Knight said in the letter obtained by Reuters.

Knight and other retail market-making firms and brokers together lost more than $500 million in the IPO.

Some firms, like UBS AG, which disclosed it lost more than $350 million, and Citigroup's Automated Trading Desk, which is said to have lost up to $35 million, have rejected the plan, saying Nasdaq should be responsible for all of the losses, because it acted in a for-profit manner in the IPO.

Liabilities at U.S. exchanges, which have some regulatory duties, are capped in most instances. Nasdaq's cap is $3 million a month.

Knight said it lost more than $35 million in the IPO, but it urged the SEC to leave the discussion of liability limitations and regulatory immunity to another day.

Citadel Securities, which is said to have lost $20 million, has also voiced support for the plan.

Still, Knight urged the SEC to reject a portion of Nasdaq's plan, which would require firms that sign on to waive their right to sue the exchange, a requirement Knight called "misplaced."

"Setting forth those types of requirements in the context of a rule filing inappropriately mixes commercial issues with regulatory requirements," Knight said in the three-page letter also addressed to SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro.

It said if the SEC disagrees and determines that some form of release is appropriate, it should only be sought after Nasdaq members are notified of the amount Nasdaq is willing to pay under the terms of the accommodation plan.

This past summer has been a tough year for those trying to grow tomatoes around Thessaloniki and here in Halkidiki. I can?t speak for the rest of Greece but many homeowners complained of a cold Spring followed by an unrelenting hot summer and a bug that would eat the tomato plants from inside out.

My parents came here late and some of the t0mato crop survived and we?re enjoying the fruits of their labours now with deep red, sweet, meat yet juicy tomatoes that are remarkably delicious all on their own. Our summer home is just a few minutes walk from the sea and I?m sure that sea breeze has licked these tomatoes.

Tomatoes are one of the pillars of making a good Greek salad. If you?re going to make a Greek salad (us Greeks call it a Horiatiki or Village) you should make it now while tomatoes are in season. I?ve posted on a proper Greek Salad before but I wanted to share this stylized version of it?.there?s some elevation and I wanted to say thank you to Acropolis Organics who?s been providing the olive oil for the past three Greek Supper Clubs I?ve organized.

Some sea salt, Feta cheese (of course its Greek) and dried Greek oregano and you?ve completed your Greek salad.

To reproduce the Acropolis Greek salad first cut your tomatoes into wedges and lay your foundation. Next up, cut your cucumbers into 1/2 inch thick sticks and lay on top of the tomatoes. Now cut your peppers into slender slices and lay those on top. Season with sea salt, gently place your sliced onions and olives on the salad and drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkle dried Greek oregano.

The only extra ingredient you may need is some good crusty bread to mop-up the sauce created from the juices of the vegetables and the olive oil. Go on?.dunk away?its the Greek thing to do!

Everything Everywhere signs 5-year deal with MasterCard for mobile payments

MasterCard has switched up its NFC and Mobile Payments deal with T-Mobile and Orange to include corporate parent / sibling Everything Everywhere. The pairing will leverage the existing Orange Cash standard to get users onto the service, building out a person-to-person payment system similar to Pingit as they go. It's reportedly angered rival networks Vodafone and O2, still smarting from last week's 4G news, who were co-operating on a unified mobile payments service called "Project Oscar" that would have standardized the system nationwide. Given that Vodafone has partnered with Visa and O2 is trying things out on its own, perhaps the next time you choose a phone, you'll have to side with your card-provider of choice, too.

Australian Football league launches major anti-homophobia drive ...

The Australian Football League (AFL) has ?declared war? on homophobia in a new initiative.

League chief Andrew Demetriou, Olympic flag bearer Lauren Jackson and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire will lead the campaign to change attitudes towards LGBT people in sport and the workplace.

The campaign will begin in the wake of a homophobic slur recently made by Stephen Milne ? who plays for St Kilda?s -?against Harry O?Brien of Collingwood Magpies.

As reported by Aaron Langmaid in the Herald Sun, the initiative will be pushed via year-long TV and social media campaign, which will encourage people to stand up and make a difference.

In a letter, Mr Demetriou said discrimination should not be tolerated and that it was everyone?s responsibility to tackle such negative attitudes and behaviour.

He added that the ?No to Homophobia? initiative was of great importance and had the full weight of the AFL industry behind it.

He said: ?A campaign of this nature promoting respect for each other, healthy relationships and a safe, inclusive environment is imperative if we are to affect positive cultural change.

?We believe the AFL is one game for all Australians.

?Through both our actions and the guidelines that govern our game, we are committed to providing a truly inclusive, safe and welcoming environment that fosters healthy, respectful relationships on and off the field.?

A survey by Australian body Gay and Lesbian Health revealed that more than a quarter of openly LGBT men and women were verbally abused in the past year in the state of Victoria.

Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said the state?s police force were against all forms of violence, bullying and intimidation.

?There are laws in place to protect the rights of all Victorians and we encourage people to report any acts to police,? he said.

The campaign is to be launched today, supported by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby.

The AFL is a major backer of the campaign, along with the State Government, mental health advocates and the police force.

Chronic Intestinal Worm Infection Stops Type I Diabetes in Its Tracks

Type 1 diabetes is known to affect children and adolescents, which makes it a very difficult disease to diagnose at the initial stages. Recent research now shows people suffering from chronic intestinal worm infection, especially in developing countries, have lower risk of acquiring type 1 diabetes. Patients often buy Canadian drugs for long-term treatment of the incurable lifestyle ailment. The breakthrough study may actually help reduce number of patients likely to suffer from the disease.

The human body affected by type 1 diabetes stops producing insulin needed to convert sugar and other foods into energy. Researchers based at New Jersey Medical School analyzed several mice cases with the aim of finding out why percentage of type I is lower than type 2 diabetes in developing countries.

Children and adolescents in the United States are increasingly suffering from both forms of the disease. Statistics show prevalence exists at 23% for type 1 and 21% for type 2diabetes. It was therefore important to study why living conditions made considerable difference in reducing number of cases in other countries.

Developing countries find it difficult to sustain hygienic conditions. People are therefore susceptible to chronic intestinal worm infections. Parasites find their way into the intestines through uncooked food or through hands and feet coming in contact with impurities. Water is sometimes contaminated leading to infestation of larva and parasites.
Though intestinal infection can cause severe problems like diarrhea, inflammation, and jaundice, researchers find these parasites are capable of fighting self-destructing T cells capable of causing diabetes and other autoimmune ailments.

Researchers tested mice to identify how exactly worm infection reduces malfunction in T cells. Mice infected with H. polygyrus, an intestinal worm, worked positively on T cells and help produce protein molecules capable of preventing type 1 diabetes. They found interleukin (IL-4 and IL-10) as well as cytokines produced in excess changed pathways within the immune system to prevent the autoimmune disease.

The discovery is vital in helping further studies to be conducted on mice suffering from several other parasites. For example, the H. polygyrus worm was a parasite lodged in the intestines. It was actually changing important body functions increasing resistance against a disease. Researchers have already identified several other worms including the Trichuris Suis capable of producing similar results for other chronic diseases.

Autoimmune diseases are evident on the skin, but several symptoms affect internal tissues leading to complicated illnesses. Diseases like Crohn's disease and multiple sclerosis have always presented difficulty in diagnosis as well as treatment.

People have no option but to control blood sugar with the help of insulin therapy in type 1 diabetes. They often buy Humalog to control symptoms. Many children and adolescents lead normal healthy lives by constantly monitoring blood sugar. However, preventive measures are preferred over traditional treatment options for such incurable diseases. Researchers have now found parasites are capable of reversing several chronic medical conditions.

It is just a matter of time before future studies help develop complete processes capable of preventing type 1 diabetes in highly susceptible cases connected to living conditions or diagnosed with deficiencies in the body. Added information in this direction is also likely to increase awareness about the disease and its prevention.

Game Completion Competition ? Barry's Week 4 Blog

What?s that? No balls in my mouth?? Points? But wasn?t I talking smack during the VG Confidential? I have failed whoever it is that?s backing me in this competition.

After a highly successful set of consecutive weeks, I pitched a shutout this week. My wife and I have put about 3 hours into Kirby?s Epic Yarn, which is a very fun game, but completely without challenge. You can?t die in the game, so it?s perfect for a non-gamer to play with a gamer. There?s no real frustration to be had when she messes up because it?s completely without repercussion. Now, when we played New Super Mario Wii?.that?s a completely different story.

Other than Kirby, I put about 2 hours into Rage today. I had previously started this game about 10 months ago, having preordered it and having it delivered to my home on launch day through Amazon.com. On a side note, make sure to make any of your Amazon purchases by clicking on the amazon link on our site. Okay, business out of the way, I found this game to be good, but nothing more than a thinly disguised corridor shooter/fetch-quest-a-thon. The game looks pretty good on the 360, but nothing super. The action is pretty good, but the story is completely forgettable. When I originally purchased this game, there were two things that I wanted it to be: Borderlands and Fallout. Turns out, it was neither of those two things. Again, the game is fun, but not the blockbuster that a lot of people hoped it would be.

The third game that I?ve declared for the competition is Madworld, but I didn?t put any more time into it. I will get back to it, but I?ve just been finding fun in other games.
Going forward, I expect Dust: An Elysian Tale to be my next declaration, but it won?t come until I finish one of the three games I?m currently working on.

I grew up in Tehran with a lot of love ? and I mean, a lot of love from my parents, my relatives, my grandparents, and my childhood friends. All of these are irreplaceable loves in their own right. But the love was often overshadowed with a lot of fear, shame and guilt imposed by our guardians and authority. I don?t mean fear, shame and guilt for wrong-doing but for doing anything that was not ?the norm? (the norm itself being anything but normal or sensible).

The overflow of affection in our culture cannot be matched, I admit, but it is rarely about teaching a child to be positive and confident in life, or about believing in their own abilities to make smart choices or helping them follow a dream. It is about making sure they follow the rules and that they are a good little boy or a good little girl, obedience always being the measuring stick above all things.

The rules are the rules of ages ago, no matter how little they apply to today?s world: grow up polite and obedient, get massive amounts of education that mainly your parents or relatives choose for you, become a successful doctor or dentist or engineer, no matter how much you may hate the ?respected? profession or long to be something else, marry well and bear many good children, only to repeat the process for your offspring.

Now if you break the rules and are still successful, you become the ?exceptional story?, ?the one case out of thousands?, the one ?anomaly? that still does nothing whatsoever to challenge the viewpoint at large. [Insert big fat sigh here].

Taiwan braces for return of Typhoon Tembin

Taiwan warned Sunday that Typhoon Tembin was likely to return as people struggled to clear mud-filled homes after the storm pounded the south of the island with the heaviest rains in more than a century.

The storm appeared to be heading back towards Pingtung county where people were still reeling from the flooding sparked by Tembin when it swept across the southern tip of the island Friday.

Tembin weakened to a tropical storm after moving out to sea the same day but the Central Weather Bureau said it had intensified into a typhoon again Sunday.

"Tembin regained strength and became a typhoon again early this morning. It was moving east-southeasterly," the bureau said.

Although the typhoon was still hundreds of kilometres (miles) from the island, the bureau predicted downpours in the south and southeast and called on people there to take precautions.

On its current track, Tembin was forecast to make landfall again in Pingtung Tuesday morning and move northward off the east coast.

"The clean-up has yet been finished even though we've kept working the past three days. And now I heard the typhoon is coming back," the owner of a shop in Hengchun township, told the Sanli cable news network.

"This typhoon has destroyed much of my hard work over the past 20 years," he said, visibly upset, while other members of the family used mops to remove thick mud from the floor.

The storm's unusual movement was affected by Typhoon Bolaven which struck Japan's Okinawa on Sunday, about 800 kilometres (500 miles) east of Taiwan.

Tembin forced more than 8,000 people to evacuate their homes islandwide when the most torrential rain in more than a century struck Pingtung county.

Weather bureau data indicated Pingtung has received 724 millimetres (29 inches) of rain since Wednesday, while the township of Hengchun saw more than 600 millimetres of rainfall on Friday alone.

The defence ministry mobilised more than 2,000 soldiers to help people in that area clean up their homes.

Damage to the agriculture sector totalled Tw$168 million ($5.6 million), according to the Council of Agriculture Affairs.

As of 0930 GMT, Typhoon Tembin was around 400 kilometres southwest of the main southern city of Kaohsiung.

With a radius of 180 kilometres, the typhoon was packing gusts of up to 126 kilometres per hour and moving east-southeast at five kph.

Key Pakistani Taliban figure killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan killed a dozen militants including a senior leader of the Taliban in Pakistan, the international military coalition said Saturday, dealing a blow to armed extremists operating on both sides of the countries' porous border.

The strike in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province killed Mullah Dadullah, the self-proclaimed Taliban leader in Pakistan's Bajur tribal area that lies across the border, late Friday afternoon, coalition spokesman Maj. Martyn Crighton said.

Dadullah reportedly took over after Bajur's former Pakistani Taliban leader, Maulvi Faqir Mohammed, fled to Afghanistan to avoid Pakistani army operations.

He was responsible for the movement of fighters and weapons, as well as attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, a coalition statement said Saturday. It added that Dadullah's deputy, identified only as Shakir, was also killed in the strike along with 10 other militants, and that an assessment made in conjunction with Afghan security forces determined no civilians had been killed or injured.

The airstrike was in Kunar's Shigal district, which lies about 15 kilometers (about nine miles) from the Pakistani border, but Crighton would not say whether an unmanned drone or manned aircraft had launched the missiles.

A spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, Ahsanullah Ahsan, said Dadullah was killed in a drone strike in Kunar. He said Maulana Abu Bakar has been named as the new chief of the Bajur region.

Pakistani intelligence officials said Dadullah and 19 others were killed in the attack. Initially, they said the strike was on Pakistani territory, but later they conceded it was in Afghanistan.

Militant hideouts along the Afghan-Pakistan border have been a source of tension for both governments as well as for the coalition, with each saying the others are not doing enough to expel the various pro-Taliban factions.

The Pakistani intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, said Friday's coalition airstrike occurred after a cross-border attack by Pakistani Taliban militants who came from Afghanistan. The Pakistani intelligence officials said the militiamen and army soldiers fought the militants for hours but eventually repelled the attack.

Jahangir Azam Khattak, a local Pakistani government official, said dozens of militants attacked a Pakistani post manned by anti-Taliban militiamen in the Salarzai area of Bajur. He said six militants were killed and four tribesmen were wounded.

However, Crighton said there was no coordination between Pakistani and coalition military leaders on the airstrike.

"This was an independent operation and not associated with any others," he said.

Taliban-affiliated militants operate on both sides of the porous border, with various groups targeting both coalition forces in Afghanistan and the Pakistani military.

Pakistan has complained of cross-border attacks by militants hiding out in eastern Afghanistan and has criticized Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces for not doing enough to stop them or expel them from Afghan territory.

The U.S. and Afghanistan, however, have long criticized Pakistan for its failure to prevent militants from carrying out attacks in the opposite direction.

A Kunar provincial government spokesman, Wasifullah Wasifi, said four wounded Pakistani citizens have been hospitalized in Kunar and will be questioned about the activities of the Taliban inside Afghan territory.

"They were exactly where this incident happened yesterday, so I am sure they were with these who were killed," Wasifi said. He added, "We are trying to find out how long these people have been here and why they were here."

Speaking at recent conferences in Stavropol and Pyatigorsk, Andrey Dirgin, Head of Research FOREX CLUB Group of Companies, said he expected the Euro to strengthen to $1.27 in September. ?The conferences, held by FOREX CLUB to give insights and information on major economies and the FX markets, attracted institutional and regional investors.

Dirgin went on to state that future decisions on the European Stability Mechanism are likely to have a major impact on the foreign exchange markets in the coming months. He predicted that liquidity would also be a key issue for investors, due to the appreciation of long-term financing in the global economy.

Also speaking at the conferences, Pavel Kasparov, Analyst-Instructor of the International Academy of Investments and Trading, official partner of FOREX CLUB in Russia and the CIS, said: "Investors are setting more and more requirements not only to the profitability of investment vehicles but also to their stability in a crisis situation. Traditionally popular saving instruments such as bank deposits and real estate no longer meet the growing expectations of investors. The current situation in the Euro Zone has led not only to rising sovereign debt rates for Southern Euro Zone countries and Euro volatility, but also an increasing risk of a collapse of the economics of the European Union.

"In this environment of growing risks, not all investment instruments show the same yield growth. Bank deposits and investment in real estate provide investors with a low yield in an environment of heightened risk and at a level below the risk-return demands of investors. That's why there is an increasing demand for investment vehicles that combine greater returns with a higher resistance to the financial crisis."
