Master Food Preservers from OSU Extension Service, led by Carol Nelson, will teach a public workshop to demonstrate pickling methods. Participants will get to put the recipes to work and make a jar of each to take home. The low-temperature pasteurization method, which helps keep pickles crisp, will be demonstrated and used.

Choose to attend a workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 14 or Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon or from 1? to 4 p.m. at the OSU Extension Office in Redmond. Participants must pre-register by Aug. 10 at 541-548-6088.

DaCosta recently moved to Bend from Boston, Mass., where he had been performing, directing and teaching theater for nearly 15 years. He has worked both professionally and semi-professionally throughout the Greater Boston Metro Area in both musical and non-musical theater. Cost is $25.

An Adult Acting Intensive Workshop with Susan Benson will run six weeks, from Aug. 15 to Sept. 29, on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. Students will develop vocal quality, stage presence and movement awareness through scene work, improvisation and individual monologue study. There will be no class on Sept. 5, but students will have the opportunity to view a closed tech rehearsal of Richard III.

Youth theatre summer camp

?Innovation Theatre Works has announced The Young Artists Theatre Conservatory? is initiating its first Summer Theatre Camp Intensive in August.

ITW?s Artistic Director Brad Hills said in a news release, ?We have received resounding enthusiasm for our year-long YATC and Children?s Theatre Workshop? programs along with an obvious thirst for more. We noted there is not currently a summer theatre camp in our region and thought we were at the point where we could offer a fun and comprehensive experience to all age groups.?

The summer camp will be held at Innovation Theatre Works and will be structured as a two-week, four-day-per-week full theatrical immersion camp with the goal of mounting a production in each age group at the end of the camp. The cost of the camp will be $199 per student with a maximum of 12 students per age bracket.

The camp will be held at ITW from Aug. 6-16, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from camp.

Each age bracket will rotate through a morning session of fun and interactive classes in voice, movement, acting and other theatrical essentials. After lunch break, each age bracket will concentrate on the production of the play they will be working on. Final plays will be presented to the public on Saturday morning, Aug. 18. In addition, members of the local theatrical and film community will be invited to attend to view the progress of our young thespians.?

Risk of dying of prostate cancer really has been decreasing ? THE ...

According to a study published on line last week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, not only are men with prostate cancer more likely to die from other conditions, the risk that they will die of prostate cancer (as opposed to other conditions) has been decreasing significantly over time.

The study by Epstein et al. is based on data from > 700,000 men identified in the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) and in the Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death databases. According to the lead researcher (as quoted in an article on the HealthDay web site): ?Our study is the first to analyze specific causes of death among men with prostate cancer.?

The databases allowed the research team to look at causes of deaths from 1973 through 2008 for 490,341 men in the USA and from 1961 through 2008 for 210,212 men in Sweden.

The authors were then able to estimate the cumulative incidence of death from seven selected causes accounting for > 80 percent of the reported deaths and also to analyze mortality trends by calendar year and age at diagnosis and length of follow-up.

There primary results are reported as follows:

• Among all the men in the two databases
  • 52 percent of the men in Sweden died during the 47-year study period.
  • 30 percent of men in the USA died during the 35-year study period.
• Among men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the two databases
  • 35 percent of Swedish men died from this disease during the study period.
  • 16 percent of American men died from this disease during the study period.
• The cumulative incidence of prostate cancer-specific death declined during follow-up in both populations.
• The cumulative incidences of death from ischemic heart disease and from cancers other than prostate cancer remained constant.
• During the last 5 years of the study period (i.e., from 2003 to 2008),
  • The 5-year cumulative incidence of death from prostate cancer was 29 percent in Sweden.
  • The 5-year cumulative incidence of death from prostate cancer was 11 percent in the USA.

It is also noted that most of the men who died from prostate cancer during the two study periods were men diagnosed when they were older or were diagnosed before the widespread use of the PSA test.

Dr. Epstein is further quoted as stating:

We hope the study will have an impact on the clinical management of men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

and

We hope it will encourage physicians to use the diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage men to modify lifestyle factors, like losing weight, increasing physical activity and stopping smoking. We believe that adopting a healthier lifestyle may reduce a man?s risk of other chronic medical conditions that ultimately account for more deaths among men with prostate cancer than the disease itself.

The report on the HealthDay web site also offers statements from Dr. Durado Brooks of the American Cancer Society and from Dr. Louis Kavoussi, chairman of urology at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in New York, with regard to the implications of these data on the need for appropriate use of the PSA test (as opposed to mass, population-based screening). According to Kavoussi:

Prostate cancer does kill and if you pick it up early, it can be treated. The problem with PSA screening is that too many men are treated when they don?t have to be. It?s not bad to detect prostate cancer. The bad thing is that you treat everybody.

He added that:

Many men don?t need to be screened. Those who should be screened are men with a family history of prostate cancer, blacks and anyone else at high risk.

Epstein and her colleagues conclude that, in both the USA and Sweden:

• Men diagnosed with prostate cancer are less likely to die from prostate cancer than from another cause, and that
• Because many of these other causes of death are preventable through changes in lifestyle, interventions that target lifestyle factors should be integrated into prostate cancer management.

For week five of the #kinderblog2012 challenge we were asked to create a photo post showing five things from our homes, describing them in 140 characters or less, that provides the community with a glimpse into who we are perhaps outside of the education realm. This was surprisingly more difficult than I thought, but I thought I would give it ago and simply use the cropping tool to hide the scattered mess that my little basement apartment tends to be!

Google has a knack for coming up with features that you never even realized you need until they exist.

Google Handwrite is one of those features.

As Google software engineer Rui Ueyama explains on the official Google blog,?Handwrite is simply?another way to conduct Web searches from your smartphone or tablet.?It means that you can now?write out search terms with your finger instead of tapping them out the good old-fashioned way. (You can still also search using your voice or an image, of course.)

It sounds like a silly feature at first, but?you'll likely fall in love with it after a couple of tries. I most certainly did.

As someone with handwriting so atrocious that I should be a medical professional, I expected that Handwrite would fail to recognize any query I tried. But instead, it flawlessly transcribed three out of every five words, no matter how long or bizarre they were. I tried to trip the feature up by mixing?cursive and block letters, but no dice?? Handwrite still did pretty well. It even worked like a charm when I wrote with my eyes closed and one of my hands?metaphorically?tied behind my back.

I have a hunch that once one gets used to writing things out on a mobile device's screen, it could become a faster to search than good ol' typing.

To try Handwrite yourself, you'll need?an Apple device running iOS 5 or higher, an Android smartphone running Android 2.3 or higher, or an Android tablet running Android 4.0 or higher. If you've got one of those around, open your browser, go to the Google search page and look for the "Settings" button. There you can enable Handwrite.

Once you've done that, you can just tap the new?Handwrite icon any?time you want to scrawl out?your search query. And don't worry, you can still continue using auto-complete in conjunction with Handwrite. Here's how the two work together:

Stay organized to reduce stress during disability evaluation process

More than 28,000 Service members, with support from families and caregivers, are currently going through the joint?Department of Defense?(DoD)and Department of Veterans Affairs program called the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) process. The process determines fitness for continued military service and appropriate benefits for those who are separated or retired for a service-connected disability.

Since the IDES process is comprehensive, there are many items to keep track of, including physician appointments, medical and service records, medications, medical and physical evaluation boards and benefits.?To reduce stress, health experts recommend staying organized throughout the process. Here are some tips for wounded warriors and their families and caregivers to take control of their health during the IDES process:

• Make sure you have the contact information for your DoD Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLO) and Veterans Affairs (VA) Military Service Coordinator (MSC). You should reach out to them whenever you have questions about any part of the IDES process.?
• Try using a journal, planner, notebook, personal digital assistant, smart phone, laptop or whatever method works best for you to keep all the information you need together in one place and to give you reminders.?
• Remember to record your upcoming medical appointments and set up reminders so you don?t miss any. Reschedule only if absolutely necessary since that may add days or weeks to the process.
• Keep copies of all your treatment records and keep a record of all claimed disabling conditions, especially during your initial interview with the VA MSC.
• Maintain a list of all your medications, consider adding the usage schedule to your calendar and note how you felt when you took them so you can tell your doctor.
• When you have questions for your doctor make sure to record those and bring them with you to your next appointment.
• Access the DoD Compensation and Benefits Handbook for Wounded, Ill and Injured when you need a quick reference guide and instructions on how to find more information.

Keeping up with all this information may take some extra effort, but in the long run it will assist you, and your family,?as you progress through the IDES process.
