Texas Health, Blue Cross to form accountable care organization

Texas Health Resources and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas are forming an accountable care organization.

Texas Health Resources and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas will join forces to form an accountable care organization.

The two companies made the announcement Monday and said it would be one of the largest accountable care organizations in the nation, the Dallas Morning News reported. The ACO will begin with 50,000 enrollees, Ron Long, chief financial officer of Arlington-based Texas Health, told the Morning News.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas is based in Richardson.

An ACO is a group of medical providers and related companies that work together to save money while improving health care, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. ACOs are a a part of the federal Affordable Care Act and they originally were designed to apply to the federal Medicare program, the Star-Telegram said.
