ONLY ON 12: Family of slain elderly couple speaks out after killer ...

WAYNESBORO, Ga.--A Burke County criminal has avoided the death penalt just 10 days before his trial was set to begin.

Tony Grubbs agreed to a plea deal, admitting to stabbing and killing a well known elderly couple in Waynesboro two years ago.

Ralph and Trudy Gordon were stabbed to death in their home by Tony Grubbs. A judge sentenced him to life without parole, plus an additional 40 years.

Their granddaughter is speaking out about facing her grandparents' killer, and his new fate.

Stephanie Huff says, "My grandparents would have given him the shirt of their backs if he had only asked."

But Tony Grubbs didn't ask. Back in July of 2010, he broke into the Gordon's home, stabbed the couple, stole their car, and pawned some of their jewelry.

"For them to be taken away like this, i don't think i'll ever get closure," Huff tells News 12's Laura Warren.

Friday, Grubbs plead guilty to all charges, admitting for the first time
that he was responsible for taking Stephanie's grandparents from her.

"When he said yes, to everything the judge asked, did he do it, it just made me very angry," she says.

A sentiment that resonates with the entire family. A family angry to come to terms with the fact that they will never see them again.

"The most important thing for us, for all of us, would be to have them here. Which isn't going to happen," Huff says.

By pleading guilty, Grubbs avoided going to trial for the death penalty.
A decision the Gordon family is at peace with.

"We just don't want to even deal with it any longer," Huff says.

Huff says a lengthy trial rehashing old memories of the painful loss
probably wouldn't have brought any more closure than the plea deal.

"It will never replace what we've lost and had to deal with in these past two years," she says, "My grandmother and my grandfather were, very special to us. They made us who we are."

And when asked if she had the chance to say something to the man who took her grandparent's life, she responded, "My grandparents taught me, that if you don't have anything nice to say, then it's best to just not say anything at all. So we'll just leave it at that."
