Though the Wizards' playoff chances look terribly bleak after only seven games, they're not being helped by the continuing good play of other teams in their division.
The Wizards' chances for the playoffs aren't looking too hot these days after an 0-7 start and no return anytime soon for their two best players, John Wall and Nene. That being said, they play 82 games this season, not 66. Here's what happened Thursday and Friday around the Eastern Conference.
Thursday night, the Miami Heat held off the Denver Nuggets 98-93 to move to 7-3, keeping their healthy, early lead in the Southeastern Division over second-place Charlotte(!), who sits at 4-3. The other teams in action Thursday night were from the stacked Atlantic Division, where the Brooklyn Nets beat the Boston Celtics 102-97 and the New York Knicks won their sixth-straight game to start the season, defeating the San Antonio Spurs, 104-100.
Friday night, the Atlanta Hawks brought their record to .500 with a 112-96 victory over the Sacramento Kings, and the Orlando Magic defeated the Detroit Pistons, 110-106. The Knicks lost their first game of the season, 105-95 against the Memphis Grizzlies, who now have the NBA's best record at 7-1. The Philadelphia 76ers continued their surprisingly good start without Andrew Bynum by defeating the Utah Jazz ? the Wizards' Saturday night opponent ? 99-93, and the Indiana Pacers blew by the Dallas Mavericks, 103-93.
